Much of our teaching is conducted in the local community.  Some of the projects we are using this year are:-

VITW are planning and running a weekly snack bar as part of their ASDAN Enterprise short course.  They provide a delivery service to teachers and students. Over the year, to experience travelling, the students have used various modes of transport, ie. Ferry, train and bus.  They regularly travel by bus to the local supermarket each week for their food shopping and have a drink at South Essex College (to encourage them to interact socially and to experience the college environment).  They also regularly visit a local OAP, who struggles with her garden, and help by weeding and mowing her lawns each week.  VITW are planning visits for the Spring term to DP World and Amazon Distribution Centre to have a tour of their premises.   They have also visited USP College to have a tour and the staff at the college have made arrangements for our class to have use of one of their classrooms to undertake lessons and to have lunch at USP College, to get them familiar and experience college life.

VITU plan and run the VIth Form Café every Thursday as part of their ASDAN employability.  Staff and students are invited to place an order as well as an increasing number of main school staff.  The group are managing orders for 15 to 20 people over one lunch time, for which they buy the food, maintain budget and finances, cook the orders, run the café, serve and clear away.  VITU also run a very successful car cleaning service, which is used by members of the school staff.

VIKN plan and run a snack bar each Wednesday, as part of their ASDAN employability.  They shop at a local supermarket and purchase drinks in the café after they have completed their shopping.  They have visited and had a tour of the Amazon distribution centre in Tilbury.

VIME and VIWN have weekly swimming lessons and lunch at a local café.  They regularly visit a local library and spend time there choosing books and reading with the students.  They also take part in visits to a large shopping centre, where they purchase drinks and snacks.

As part of the VIth Form curriculum the students go swimming and use the gym at the local leisure centre.  They go for nature walks at local parks.

Every Friday the VIth Form take part in vocational studies.  Some students go to Writtle College and undertake horticultural, equine, animal care, flower arranging, farming and nature walks.    They also have a performing arts group who take part in drama, dancing and singing.  There are two hospitality groups, who shop at the local supermarket and cook for staff and students in the VIth Form and main school.   Some of the students take part in gardening in our school allotments or arts and crafts, if the weather is bad.

Throughout the year every class arranges trips to various destinations to enhance and widen the students’ social and learning experiences.
